Adelle Todd

June 20, 1926 — January 7, 2022

T he lovely spirit of Adelle Marie Todd rose to the light of Heaven above on the night of Friday, January 7, 2022 at the age of 95.

Born in Sioux City, Iowa to Floyd and Marie (Karhaus) Thompson on June 20, 1926, she was the youngest of four.  There the family lived until moving to Des Moines after Adelle’s high school graduation.

Then as an R.N. there and as head floor nurse, she became fond of a patient from Kansas who was the mother of her husband to be, Eldon Todd.  It didn’t take him long to realize such a prize and after a brief engagement, Adelle and Eldon married in 1949.

They lived in Manhattan, Kansas where she was a nurse in the hospital nursery with their first child on the way while he would finish his degree in Veterinary Medicine one day.  Then with pretty little three year old Linda and baby David soon to arrive, Adelle and Eldon moved to Des Moines for a year while he kept small animals alive.  So then Sabetha, Kansas was the place they chose to be where Dr. Todd set up his practice with Adelle right by his side and Mary became child three…a handsome family.

Adelle had a big heart and a gentle kind spirit with a twinkle in her eye; clever in her own right with hilarious little quips.  She was a natural comedian who would remember sayings or rhymes from her old school days and then love to sing or recite them.  She loved hats of all different fashion and color, loved flowers and butterflies, too, but especially favored cobalt blue.  Adelle was lively with a ready smile and enjoyed venturing out in search of books about the treasures she’d also find at flea markets or estate sales.  Then with her knowledge of antique jewelry she would create a program, a lighthearted presentation for the clubs she had joined.  Dressed with hat and gloves in grand lady style of that time, she with fascinating fun for all would entertain.

Adelle was active in the community and church as well.  She loved babies and hugs and raindrops on roses, spending time with grandchildren playing games and coloring posters.  She enjoyed a good laugh, never forgot a birthday or gift to surprise.  Adelle Todd was well loved when she was alive.

Adelle is survived by her three children, Linda (Ray), David (Nancy), and Mary as well as her grandchildren Will, Catherine, Emily (Jacob), Luke, Sarah, Rebekah (Michael), Katie, Todd (Melissa), and Charley; and one sweet little great-grandchild, Henry.
