Marvyn Weeks

M arvyn Eugene Weeks was born on October 21, 1930, in Irving Kansas.  He was the eldest of three children born to Verne William and Iva (Higgins) Weeks. He grew up in the Blue Rapids area, attended Blue Rapids Grade School, and he graduated from Blue Rapids High School with the class of ’49.  After serving in the United States Navy, he returned home and married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Rundus, on June 10, 1951.  To this union was born three children.

He began his career as a lumberman by working first for Burgner-Bowman Matthews Lumber Company, and then owned and operated Blue Rapids Lumber Company until 1991.  At that time he began working for Diamond D trailer factory until this business relocated.  During the last ten years of his career, he worked for the Marshall County Road and Bridge Department and he retired in 2004 at the age of 73.

Marvyn was a member of the United Presbyterian Church where he served as Trustee, Elder, and Curator of the Church Farm. He also enjoyed working on the Joe Rundus family farm where he also taught all his children and grandchildren how to drive trucks and tractors, how to shoot guns, and how to work hard. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s athletic events and other activities that they were involved in.

Marvyn died at Stormont-Vail Healthcare in Topeka on May 6, 2014. Those preceding him in death include his parents, and a brother Donald. He is survived by his wife Ruth, his sister Sandra Lacy, and his children and their families: Susan and John Calander, Jacob and Elizabeth, Julie and Brent Gleason, Trevor, Amber, Tanner, Sammy, Tyler, Joanie, Tessa and Baby G, and Mark Weeks, Christy, Aubrey, Hunter, Harmony, and Landon.

A Celebration of Life is Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 2:00 at the United Presbyterian Church in Blue Rapids.  Officiants will be Reverend Marilyn Sweet and Pastor Gary Phillips.  Music will be provided by Marvyn’s family.  The family will greet friends from 12:30 until service time.  Memorial contributions may be made to the United Presbyterian Church, sent in care of the Hayes-Popkess Funeral Home, 814 Castle, Seneca, KS 66538.
