Verlas Meyer

V erlas Mae (Mogler) Meyer, 88, of Sabetha, Kansas passed away Friday, June 7, 2019 at the Life Care Center of Seneca surrounded by her family.

Verlas was born on December 11, 1930 in West Bend, Iowa the daughter of Samuel and Tillie (Gerber) Mogler. She lived on a farm near Algona, Iowa until the age of 8 when the family moved to a farm east of Whittemore, Iowa. Verlas graduated from Whittemore High School in May 1948. After school she moved to Sabetha, Kansas in August of 1951. There she worked for various people helping with household duties and caring for children. Starting in 1952, Verlas worked as a telephone operator until new advancements made her job unnecessary in 1958.

On October 23, 1955 she married Carl Meyer, Jr. in a double wedding ceremony with her sister, Bernice and Ernest Erickson in Algona, Iowa. Verlas and Carl made their home on a farm near Woodlawn. There they raised their two children. She worked by her husband’s side for over 50 years helping care for livestock and crops. This past fall they celebrated 63 years of marriage.

Verlas enjoyed raising chickens and selling the eggs, tending her garden, canning her crops from the garden, embroidery, and sewing for her family. She also enjoyed activities that took her off the farm as well, such as bowling and club. She joined the Woodlawn Extension Club in June of 1962, and served as an active member for 43 years. She was also a member of the Woodlawn Baptist Church. As time went on she enjoyed trips to visit her family in Iowa.

Verlas was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Marvin, Robert and Duane; and her sisters, Arlene Esslinger, Bernice Erickson, and Lucinda Berninghaus.

Verlas is survived by her husband Carl; two children, Gary (Deb) Meyer of Sabetha, and Nancy (Wayne) Osterhaus of Seneca; her siblings, Esther Day, Jeanette Montgomery, Kenneth (Liz) Mogler, Mildred (Dean) Rickie, Calvin (Joyce) Mogler, Arthur (Eula) Mogler, and Ruth (Ken) Kerber; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A Visitation will be held Sunday, June 9, 2019 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha, Kansas. Funeral service will be Monday, June 10, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the Woodlawn Baptist Church with Pastor Duane Tramp officiating. Pallbearers are Bill Priest, Dwaine Baumgartner, Jim Kissel, Gary Bauerle, Paul Huffman, and Matt Edelman. Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren, Jeremy Meyer, Kristina Kuebler, Jackie Cox, Kyle Cossel, Joe Meyer, Kipp Cossel, and Kristin Tangeman. Interment will be made in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the University of Kansas Endowment – Parkinson’s Disease Center, sent in care of Popkess Mortuary, 823 Virginia Street, Sabetha, KS 66534.
